1. The Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed with two distinct temperature stages: a high-temperature stage using NH3 as the refrigerant and a low-temperature stage utilizing CO2. In this setup, the evaporation of NH3 refrigerant in the high-temperature stage is utilized to condense CO2 refrigerant expelled from the low-temperature stage. A condensation evaporator skillfully bridges these stages, acting simultaneously as the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage, ensuring seamless operation.
Within this sophisticated system, the heat load is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator. Subsequently, the heat absorbed by the CO2 is adeptly transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant then passes this heat to the high-temperature condenser, where it is released to the environment through a cooling medium. Condensed CO2 moves into the CO2 reservoir and proceeds to the CO2 gas-liquid separator through a dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is propelled to the evaporator by the CO2 circulation pump—eliminating the need for terminal cooling devices like standalone freezers or chillers. After passing through the evaporator, the two-phase CO2 cycles back to the gas-liquid separator, as the gaseous CO2 is reclaimed by the compressor, compressed, and returned to the condensing evaporator, perfectly completing the cascade refrigeration cycle.

The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional refrigeration setups, complete with a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. On the other hand, the low-temperature CO2 system incorporates CO2 compressors, condensing evaporators, reservoirs, gas-liquid separators, filter dryers, pumps, throttling devices, evaporators, and expansion vessels, all contributing to a flawless cooling process.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator is a vital component—it serves to meticulously segregate CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing compressor wet strokes and maintaining an unwavering liquid level during pump operation. It also stores the liquid from terminal equipment and pipelines when the pump ceases operation. If used as a CO2 reservoir when inactive, its volume should accommodate the entire CO2 liquid content of the system. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator is positioned atop the gas-liquid separator to effectively manage CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator doubles as the NH3 side’s evaporator and the CO2 side’s condenser, where compound liquid vaporizes and absorbs heat inside the tube while CO2 gas is condensed into liquid in the shell.
