1. The Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously combines two distinct stages: a high-temperature stage employing NH3 as the refrigerant, and a low-temperature stage utilizing CO2. This dual-stage system operates with NH3 evaporation in the high-temperature stage to condense the discharged CO2 gas from the low-temperature stage. A pivotal component, the condensation evaporator, serves as the bridge between these stages, acting concurrently as the low-temperature condenser and the high-temperature evaporator.
In this sophisticated system, the heat load is first transferred to the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator. The absorbed heat is then seamlessly passed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. From there, the NH3 refrigerant dispatches the heat to a high-temperature condenser, whereupon it's released into the environment with the help of a cooling medium. The CO2, once condensed in the evaporator, is directed into the CO2 reservoir, ushered through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. A CO2 circulation pump propels the liquid CO2 to the evaporator, sans any end cooling device like a single freezer or chiller. Following its journey through the evaporator, two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator. The gaseous CO2 is then drawn by the compressor, compressed, and reintroduced into the condensing evaporator, continuing this elegant refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, each stage functions as a standalone system using a single refrigerant. The system's architecture is bifurcated: the high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors conventional setups, comprising a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and a throttling device. Conversely, the low-temperature CO2 system features a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The In the CO2 compression refrigeration system, the CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role, effectively segregating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, mitigating the risk of compressor wet stroke, and ensuring a steady liquid level during pump operation. It also accommodates returning liquid from end equipment and pipelines when the pump ceases operation. If employed as a CO2 reservoir during downtime, its capacity should suffice to store all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator atop the separator is advisable to thwart excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. The condensing evaporator in an NH3/CO2 cascade system functions dually: as an NH3-side evaporator and a CO2-side condenser, facilitating compound liquid evaporation and heat absorption within the tube while CO2 condenses into a liquid in the shell.
