1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously composed of two stages: a high-temperature stage and a low-temperature stage. The high-temperature stage utilizes NH3 as the refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage employs CO2. The evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature system serves to condense the CO2 gas emitted from the low-temperature stage. A specially designed condensation evaporator connects both stages, functioning as both the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage.
In this sophisticated system, the heat load is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat by CO2 is then conveyed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The high-temperature NH3 subsequently transfers the heat to the high-temperature condenser, which releases it to the environment using a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 from the condensing evaporator enters the CO2 reservoir, then passes through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 is circulated to the CO2 evaporator by a CO2 circulation pump. After evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the separator, where gaseous CO2 is compressed and cycled back through the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the cascade refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low-temperature stages are independent refrigeration systems, each using a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system resembles conventional refrigeration systems, comprising a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role in isolating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This separation prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and stores excess liquid when the pump halts. Additionally, the separator can act as a CO2 reservoir when inactive, provided its volume accommodates all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator atop the separator ensures CO2 pressure doesn't escalate post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator is dual-purpose, serving as the NH3 side's evaporator and the CO2 side's condenser. It efficiently absorbs and condenses carbon dioxide gas into a liquid.
